Benton Co. farmers harvest a 60-acre thanks to Donald Trump after E15 decision

Dave Bangert, Journal and Courier Columnist

OXFORD – Sitting around a table, eating breakfast a week ago at the Dan Patch Café the way they usually do, eight or nine farmers got talking about President Donald Trump’s call during a rally in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to expand the market for the corn-based E15 fuel.

And they got talking about how they could show their appreciation.

“There’s a lot of B.S. in the world, so you’ll get a lot of that,” said Bruce Buchanan, who farms 6,000 acres with his son, Allen, in Benton and Warren counties. “So, you’ll get a lot of that when we get together to talk, too. … But we know for a fact that, for the ag economy, income is down and prices are down. What this is going to do for that, we don’t know and you don’t know, for sure. But we felt it was a pretty impactful thing for our president to do.”

What they settled on – “talking freely over a cup of coffee,” Buchanan said – was a greeting carefully harvested into 60 acres of drying corn near Boswell.

“Thanks Mr. Trump for E15.”
