Renovations to dorms force 1,100 returning IU students to live off Bloomington campus

Michael Reschke, Herald-Times

An estimated 1,100 returning Indiana University students who signed on-campus housing contracts for the 2019-20 school year will be living off campus. The change comes from a decision to expedite renovations of Foster and McNutt residence halls in response to problems with mold.

Returning students who planned to live on campus will have the option to live in university-managed apartment complexes off campus. Like in residence halls, the apartment complexes will have residence assistance staff. There will be a range of cost options comparable to on-campus housing, according to a notice from IU Residential Programs and Services.

Housing costs will be billed through students' Bursar accounts. Students will not pay for extra fees typically associated with off-campus housing, such as a security deposit, internet and utilities. Housing contracts will also be for the 2019-20 academic year instead of the full-year lease common on the private housing market. Affected students will not be charged a penalty for breaking their housing contract if they do not wish to live in a university-managed apartment off campus.

While the university has contracted with three off-campus apartment complexes, the locations have not been released to the public because some details are still being finalized, said Chuck Carney, IU spokesman. The complexes will have parking. Transportation to and from campus will also be provided, either through a shuttle service or the bus system, he said. IU students pay a transportation fee each semester that allows unlimited rides on any Campus or Bloomington Transit bus.
