Indiana may not have ocean beaches or towering mountains to stimulate the visual senses.
That doesn't mean the state lacks photogenic charms. Hoosier landscapes — and waterscapes — are gorgeous and the source of great pride.
To underscore that fact, the Indiana Office of Tourism Development put its best scenery forward in announcing the winners of its InstaIndiana online voting contest.
"Insta-what?", you say.
The state recently invited users of Instagram, a social media site emphasizing pictures, to vote for Indiana's most Instagram-worthy places. Among the choices on the voting list were all types of places to explore like parks, agritourism destinations, wineries, outdoor recreation places, sports venues, downtowns, museums and zoos.
The top 10 finalists were decidedly among the state's most scenic and interesting destinations, several of which are near Vigo and surrounding counties.
In order of top finishers were Brown County State Park; Indiana Dunes State Park; Turkey Run State Park (Parke County); Clifty Falls State Park (Madison); French Lick Resort; McCormick’s Creek State Park (Owen County); Michigan City Lighthouse/Pier; Indiana University (Bloomington); Patoka Lake (Dubois County); and Pokagon State Park (northeast Indiana).
It's no surprise that seven of the 10 are state parks.
If you'd like to view photos of each of the winners and many others, you can do so by visiting the visitindiana.com website or by following the @visitindiana feed on Instagram.
We applaud state tourism officials for promoting the contest and featuring the beautiful pictures of the locations at its online sites. Hoosiers have many reasons to be proud of their state, and these are some of them.
